Today marks the birthday of my personal bias Jung Soo Yeon, better know as SNSD’s Ice Princess Jessica!
Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Jessica was discovered along with her sister on a family vacation to Korea when she was 11 years old. Since their parents wanted to encourage their daughters musical careers, the family immediately moved to Korea so that Jessica could begin her training with SM Entertainment. She, along with Sooyoung, Hyoyeon, and Yuri trained for the longest in SNSD and it’s no wonder that they often seem closest to each other. She also formed a close bond later with fellow Korean-American member Tiffany as they both attended the Kent Foreign School together. On an episode of Win Win, Jessica admits that she couldn’t get close to Tiffany at first because of her loud personality which was so different from hers, but now you can see just how much they care about each other when they appear together on shows like Pops In Seoul in 2009.
Though originally known for her dance as a trainee, there’s no doubt that one of the first things that comes to mind when Jessica name is mentioned is her voice. Taeyeon rightfully gets most of the credit when it comes to SNSD’s vocals, but Jessica as lead singer compliments her voice so well and has been complimented several times on her own vocal abilities. In all of SNSD’s official albums, except for their ‘1st Asia Tour Concert’ album, Jessica has 2 out of the 3 songs that aren’t sung by the entire group: “One Year Later” with SHINee’s Onew, and “Caramel Coffee” with Tiffany. Jessica, Tiffany, and Seohyun also formed the group’s first unofficial subunit by singing “Oppa Nappa” and “Mabinogi”. Her duet song “Naengmyun” with comedian Park Myun Soo was highly popular in the summer of 2009, so much so that they even performed the song on the weekly music show Music Core. She released first official solo song “Sweet Delight” in 2010, and later also released OSTs for the dramas Romance Town and Wild Romance.
Jessica has a few nicknames, GorJess, SicaChu, Jessi, Sleepy Sica, but her best known nickname is the “Ice Princess”. This moniker was given to her by SNSD’s own maknae Seohyun and fits the cold image that she showed in their earlier promotions and appearances on variety shows. The image was further solidifed by her ability to “cool” down an atmosphere with her “Sica Effect” and her repeated displays of love for air condition. This was seen especially in the “Girls Generation in Phukhet” when she complains to her younger members about having to run in the sun. Even the cast accomodated her by making sure her mission took place indoors while the others were outside. However, even her own sister, f(x)’s Krystal, has admitted that Jessica has become a lot warmer and affectionate over the years leading both her and SONEs to say that the Ice Princess is melting.
Of course the title Ice Princess doesn’t just refer to her desire to stay cool. She has shown her lack of cooking abilities on shows like Factory Girls, Hello Baby, and her recent appearance on Running Man. She even mentions this herself and goes to learn how to cook in her episode of “Behind the Story of SNSD” for her close friend actress Park Min Young. Her love of sleep is also well documented on many variety shows and even maknae Seohyun said she was the hardest to wake up in an episode of “Happy Together”. Jessica doesn’t mind her carefree attitude though, and even admits that she’s one of the least ambitious members on Win Win. It used to stress her out before but now she prefers to just go with the flow.
Outside of her activities in SNSD, Jessica received much love for role as Elle Woods in the musical “Legally Blonde” in 2009-2010. Fin.K.L’s Ock Joo Hyun, who was also in the same drama, complimented Jessica’s dedication to the show while juggling her activities as an idol as well as her acting abilities. Jessica also played the role of Kang Jong Hee in Wild Romance, marking her first real drama role after having cameos in Unstoppable Marriage, Taehee, Hyekyo, Jihyun! and Oh My Lady! As mentioned earlier, Jessica also sang the song “Maybe” as part of the drama’s OST.
Much more can be said about her, but suffice to say Jessica has many different layers and personality quirks. From the dolphin scream to her violent tendancies to her hate of all things cucumber-related, Jessica is a girl that’s hard to completely describe. No matter which part of her you like most, her fans around the world wish her a bright future and a very happy birthday.
