In honor of Valentine’s Day, I’d like to discuss 5 fictional couples in dramas/variety that I felt had great chemistry and would not have been surprised if they were going out for real.
5. Lee Jang Woo and Ham Eunjung(T-ara)
Lee Jang Woo, cousin of singer Hwanhee of duo group Fly to the Sky, rose to fame with his role as Kim Do Jin in the wildly successful drama Smile, Donghae(2011) and only furthered it in Man of Honor(2011). On We Got Married, he was matched with Ham Eunjung, main rapper and vocalist for 7-membered group T-ara. Prior to debut, she was a child actress and made her adult acting debut in Coffee House(2010). Later, she built on her acting resume with the hit drama Dream High(2011).
Though their first meeting was slightly awkward, the two quickly developed a chemistry that’s arguably better than most of the other longer tenured couples that have been on the show. Jang Woo especially seems to enjoy making Eunjung jealous and watching her reactions, which sometimes does not sit well with her. He’s always trying to kiss her and initiate skinship, a point that Eunjung tries to resist but in the end usually gives in to her virtual husband’s whims. Jang Woo made a brief appearance in T-ara’s Japanese MV for Bo Peep Bo Peep, and the couple acted together in the MV for ZiA’s “The Way I Am.” Eunjung’s natural aegyo flows out when she has to deal with her childish husband and is something this viewer will greatly miss when the two go their separate ways.
4. Kang Gary(Leessang) and Song Ji Hyo
Gary is a member of duo group Leessang, and his popularity from the show transfered over when they released their latest album Asura Balbalta. Song Ji Hyo is an actress who first gained fame in Princess Hours(2006) and recently starred in Gye Baek.
This unlikely pairing, from my favorite variety show Running Man, is always entertaining to watch. At first the two were so awkward that when they were left alone in a room, Gary had to quickly make an excuse to leave the room and get a cup of water. Soon though, the two created a loveline that existed only on days the show was filmed, Mondays. On those days, the two would care for each other, but on instances when filming would carry over to the next day, Ji Hyo would jokingly abandon Gary by stating it was Tuesday. Though Song Ji Hyo recently revealed her real life relationship, I’m sure the Monday Couple will still show up on occasion.
3. Lee Seung Gi and Yoona(SNSD)
The multi-talented Lee Seung Gi debuted as a ballad singer in 2004 and got his big break as an actor in 2009’s smash hit Brilliant Legacy. Also in 2009, he release his most popular track to date “Will you Marry Me”, which he performed at the SBS Gayo Dejun with the below mentioned Park Shin Hye. As if that weren’t enough, he is host and MC for 2 popular variety shows: 1 Night 2 Days, and Strong Heart. It is here he meets his partner for this segment: SNSD’s visual, the always gorgeous Yoona.
I’m not going to lie; it’s hilarious how much teasing Lee Seung Gi gets on Strong Heart whenever Yoona goes on the show. Granted, he brought it on himself with the obvious favoritism he showed her in her first few appearances. Yoona can definitely thank him too for saving her on some truly horrendous stories, the worst of which you can see on the below link. She’s usually really witty and entertaining on other shows, but it seems story telling is not her forte. At any rate, I’d pay to see distraught SONEs go up against Seung Gi’s fangirls if the two ever admitted to actually dating.

2. Jang Geun Suk and Park Shin Hye
To say Jang Geun Suk is popular is an understatement. His roles in Lovers in Prague(2005), Hong Gil Dong(2008), and Beethoven Virus(2008) led him to be cast as the irritable Hwang Tae Kyung in his arguably most famous drama, You’re Beautiful(2009). Opposite him would be the beautiful Park Shin Hye, who at that time was most famous for her role in Stairway to Heaven(2004). Though originally trained as a singer, she is primarily an actress and has starred in a myriad of dramas and CFs, including Etude House VIP cosmetics with Jang Geun Suk.
I really liked their interactions in You’re Beautiful and the two are close friends in real life. Several behind the scenes videos from the drama show them goofing off with each other and their fellow costars Lee Hong Ki, from group FT Island, and Jung Yong Hwa, from group CN Blue. Though neither are professional singers, both have surprisingly good voices as apparent by their respective contributions to the OST for You’re Beautiful and Heartstrings(2011).
1. Jung Yong Hwa(CN Blue) and Seohyun(SNSD)
Speaking of Jung Yong Hwa, while not the best of actors, the guy can definitely sing. He is leader, main vocal, and rhythmic guitarist of the popular band CN Blue, whose hits include “I’m a Loner”, “Love” and “Intuition”. His partner is the straight-laced and sensible maknae of SNSD, Seohyun. Since we started with a WGM couple, it makes sense to finish with arguably its most popular pairing to date. Known as the “Goguma Couple”, the two lasted from February 11th, 2010 to March 14th, 2011, making them also one of the longest lasting couples as well.
When Seohyun first breaks the news that she’s joining the show to fellow members Tiffany and Taeyeon, they don’t believe her in the slightest. The two are eventually supportive of the idea, though Taeyeon has a burst of anger at the WGM staff for previously matching her with older comedian Jung Hyun Don. Seohyun admits to having no dating experience, and I swear treats the whole experience as an experiment with Yong Hwa as her lab rat. It is this complete lack of experience though that creates the hilarity that ensues during their relationship. Yong Hwa is remarkably patient with her and does a great job of leading her along. He is completely baffled at times by her choices and decisions, but simply laughs it off and thinks of it as part of her charm. Their “Banmal Song”, that was originally just an assignment to them by the WGM staff, became a huge hit and the official MV uploaded on Youtube currently has over 4.3 million views. Yong Hwa would eventually expand on the song and re-release it as a digital single. Even to this day, fans of the Goguma couple hope for them to get together for real.
